Griggs could feel the eyes upon him as he stood there in the open boat, waiting. He knew those who watched him were doing so through weapon optics or over the tops of rifle barrels pointed his way, and he had no doubt that most of them were hoping he’d give them a reason to center their sights on his head and pull the trigger. Griggs was surprised, in truth, that they’d let him live this long. The fact that Keith didn’t shoot him as soon as he discovered him in that boat with Reyes’ men gave Griggs a faint ray of hope that he might talk his way out of this. But at the moment, he knew he had to get through this first hurdle—that of surviving being used as live bait—before he would even get a chance to try.

The morning seemed to drag on forever as he stood there leaning back against the steering pedestal of the open boat, listening for the sound of outboard engines, but hearing nothing but the gurgling rush of the river running under the metal hull beneath his feet. It wasn’t until the sun was nearing its midday peak that he finally heard what he’d been waiting for. The distant sound was definitely that of a boat motor, but Griggs knew it could be most any boat until it gradually grew louder, and he could at last tell that it wasn’t just one, but in fact two motors he was hearing. He knew too, that they were coming his way from downriver even before the two center-console skiffs rounded the big sweeping bend nearly a mile to the south. The moment Griggs was put there for had finally come. The crews of the other two boats had given up and turned back empty-handed in their search for the escaped survivors.

He knew they had probably split up somewhere downriver and then regrouped after finding nothing. Now, they had to be wondering if the men aboard this third boat that left with Griggs somehow had better luck. They knew the crew had turned off into this first big cutoff to the east, and they had to be hoping that despite their own failure, they wouldn’t have to return and report to Reyes with nothing to show for a wasted day. Griggs knew they’d zero in on him whether he waved them over or not as soon as they spotted the boat anchored there near the same place they’d seen it last.

He was more nervous than ever now, but he stood up straight, fully alert and focused, with his arms already moving back and forth above his head to get the attention of the two crews. Griggs was confident that they couldn’t miss seeing him there, the boat stationary as it was in the wide-open river, far enough from the bank that it couldn’t blend into the background of trees and bushes. But what would they think of the sight of him alone there in it,
